Oops! Did I Just Say That?

Did I just make that callous comment?

Probably.

Yes, I’m the friend who’ll tell you your home is cluttered; your cat is neurotic; or your kid is spoiled.

I’m usually right, but I can be tactless. I’m not good at sugar-coating these appraisals, and it’s cost me friends.

But those who stick around usually end up thanking me for my daring observations that motivated them to take action and improve their lives.

Sometimes we get too close to our own stuff. We lose perspective.

An impartial observer can bring attention to truths we might not want to, but need to, see.

This can hurt. And if a critique lacks adequate pampering, it’s easy to dismiss: “She’s insensitive. I don’t have to listen to what she said.”

Ah, I’ll work on my pampering skills.

But you must work on opening your mind and heart to daring observations, from trusted, caring sources.

They might sting and rankle, but they could also open doors to greater self awareness and a happier life.
